Why do dating sites charge for their services?

Myspace and Facebook offer their services for free and they make all of their money through advertisements. Why isn’t there a large FREE dating website that does the same thing. I know there are a few free ones but they aren’t as good as the pay sites.

What are some good more adult dating websites. I want a free adult dating website that doesn’t cost money. Something like myspace maybe but allows more adult content? There are so many dating websites i can’t find what is what out there. I just want a adult dating website that you DO NOT have to pay.
